QuickScrip is currently integrated with select Lexmark and Brother Laser Printers. These printers differ from Pin-fed and Thermal printers in many respects.

Our two most common printers are the Lexmark MS610DN (typically costs $834.40) and the Brother HL5450DN (typically costs $266.00). Brother printers tend to be cheaper, but cannot handle the workload (especially over a long period of time) that the larger Lexmark brand printers can handle. Many pharmacists use a Lexmark as their primary label printer and a Brother as a report and document printer. The Brother can double as a label printer in an emergency. Quickscrip also supports label duplexing (printing on both sides of the paper) for printer models that can support it. This feature can be useful if you wish to print more of the monograph on your labels, or conserve paper for long reports.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

  • Laser printers can print on varying sizes of labels. This allows for many different label layout options to fit your pharmacy’s needs. Larger page sizes allow you to add drug monographs, signature stickers, store hours, or messages for your customers.
  • Most laser printers can be outfitted with secondary paper trays so you can print reports and labels on the same device.
  • Unlike pin-fed printers (which are limited to set letter sizes and fixed-width fonts), laser printers can print a diverse selection of fonts and sizes. This gives your labels a cleaner, more professional look.
  • Laser printers are able to print barcodes, which will work with integrated POS and drug verification systems.
  • Laser printers can print Pharmex (drug warning stickers)

Disadvantages

  • Laser printers require frequent ink/toner cartridge replacements. These cartridges can be expensive. Prices vary by make and model. Many toners cost between $300 - $350 each. It is recommended that you use brand toner cartridges, not refurbished or off-brand cartridges.
  • Laser printers tend to have a very large foot print and are heavy. (Lexmark T650 is 12.1 x 15.7 x 15 inches and is an estimated 40lbs).
  • It is recommended that you have two laser label printers in your store in order to avoid down-time due to a printer failure.

Setup Process

If you are interested in migrating to laser labels, consult your label provider. They will help you select a design that best fits your needs. Once you have chosen a label design, mail 50 sample pages to Cost Effective. We will use the samples to assist you in formatting the information on the label. The installation process will be smoother for the pharmacy if we have the label formatting ready beforehand.
