QuickSCRIP offers the ability to cross reference prescriptions and alert the user to possible drug interactions and therapeutic duplication conflicts during the filling process. These alerts can be customized to only appear at certain severity levels and can be set to only be bypassed with passwords.

It is highly recommended that users review their software settings and ensure they meet state and federal guidelines.

Settings and Options

Settings for these alerts can be found in the Business Control File.

  1. Start in the Pharmacy Main Menu
  2. Choose 3 Utilities
  3. Choose 3 Business Control File
  4. Choose Screen 10 Medispan Drug Customization

From here, you can change settings to fit your pharmacy's needs.

Checking Prescriptions

These settings influence how far in the patient's history QuickSCRIP should check before alerting the user. Setting these back too far might accidentally trigger alerts for drugs a patient is no longer taking.

1. CECS Duplicate Therapy # Days sets the number of days to check a patient's history for possible duplicate therapies.

2.Test Period (# of days) acts like like 1, but also checks for interactions and duplicate therapies. You can set lines 1 and 2 at different values if you'd like to look further back for therapies that you would for interactions. Additionally, you can leave line 1 blank, and set line 2 to cover the same time for both checks.

3. Test On-File Rx's too? will tell QuickSCRIP whether or not to check (Y) or ignore (N) on file prescriptions when checking for drug interactions and duplicate therapies.

General Alerts

These settings impact general alerts that QuickSCRIP will issue. These alerts appear in the RXFILL screen to the right of the scrip as it is being processed. In the standard QuickSCRIP color screen, these alerts will appear in RED with white text.

Please note that these are visual alerts, and will not stop or interrupt the filling process. For alerts that can, please see the next section in the guide.

4. Drug Interaction will check for possible conflicts between a drug's chemical content and a patient's allergies. The following options will impact the frequency of this check:

  • A checks on EVERY scrip as it is filled. Includes refills and renumberings.
  • N checks ONLY on NEW scrips.
  • D checks for interactions ONLY on demand by the pharmacist.
  • O disables the check entirely. NOT RECOMMENDED

Significance level will check for drug to drug criteria that meet certain significance criteria. QuickSCRIP will alert for any interactions that are equal to or more severe than the criteria set.

  • 1 Absolute - Severe, unmanageable interactions.
  • 2 Major - Severe, yet manageable interactions.
  • 3 Moderate - Less Severe, manageable interactions.
  • 9 Possible alternative therapy interaction; severity variable or unknown.

12 Duplicate Therapy examines the patient's profile to determine if the patient already has a scrip containing the same medication.

  • A checks on EVERY scrip as it is filled. Includes refills and renumberings.
  • N checks ONLY on NEW scrips.
  • D checks for interactions ONLY on demand by the pharmacist.
  • O disables the check entirely. NOT RECOMMENDED

13 Significance Screen Level will check for duplicate therapies that meet a certain significance criteria. QuickSCRIP will alert for any duplicates that are equal to or more severe than the criteria set.

  • 2 Beta-blockers (no abuse/dependency potential)
  • 1 Narcotics (abuse/dependency potential)

As an example, if you wished to screen only for duplicate therapies with abuse potential, you would set the code as 1.

'Use Duplicate Allowance? Setting to N will warn you if there are ANY duplicate therapy matches on file. Y will only warn you if there are more duplicate therapy matches than the number allowed by Medi-Span.

Stopping and Password Alerts

These options allow you to set alerts that will force a stop on the filling process and require a password before the prescription can be filled. These alerts function separately from the general alerts.

33. Password to Continue: is where the user can set the stop password. If left blank, the password defaults to OK.

24. Drug Interaction? - Y will require you to enter a password to fill a scrip which has a Medi-Span drug to drug interaction. G will require you to enter a password for drugs that have /MSPW on the drug notes line. N will allow you to hit enter to continue.

25. Signigicance lvl will check for drug to drug criteria that meet certain significance criteria. QuickSCRIP will stop and require a password for any interactions that are equal to or more severe than the criteria set.

  • 1 Absolute - Severe, unmanageable interactions.
  • 2 Major - Severe, yet manageable interactions.
  • 3 Moderate - Less Severe, manageable interactions.
  • 9 Possible alternative therapy interaction; severity variable or unknown.

30. Duplicate Therapy? - Y will require you to enter a password to fill a scrip which has a Medi-Span drug to drug interaction. G will require you to enter a password for drugs that have /MSPW on the drug notes line. N will allow you to hit enter to continue.

31. Signif Screen level will check for duplicate therapies that meet a certain significance criteria. QuickSCRIP will stop and require a password for any duplicates that are equal to or more severe than the criteria set.

  • 2 Beta-blockers (no abuse/dependency potential)
  • 1 Narcotics (abuse/dependency potential)

32. Use Duplicate Allow? Use Duplication Allowance ([N]/Y): Y will only stop for a password if the number of duplicate therapy matches is greater than the number allowed by Medi-Span. N will stop for a password if there are ANY duplicate therapy matches.
